Sermon Intro
The definition of Christian to me is; 1. Those who believe God is almighty and his sovereignty over everything. 2. Those who believe that the Bible is inerrant Word of God. 3. Those who believe Jesus Christ is God, and his/her savior. So, for those who doesn’t believe these three things, the book of Genesis might be ridiculous. I think there is no one who do not believe anything, because I think those who insist that he/she does not believe anything has faith in not believing anything. Or those who deny the existence of God has faith in denying God. Therefore, we all believe something. The difference between Christian and others is that Christian believes God anyway, whereas the others needs reason to believe their own belief on something. Their reason is related to their comprehension. They want to believe what they can understand. They can understand that it will be good for them not to believe anything, or to deny existence of God. And some people look for the substitution of God. It will be science, common sense, practical things, philosophy, or religion. Or some people will just give up thinking about what we cannot know. In this case, he has faith in giving up thinking. So, we all believe something. But Christian believes the following passage which is written in the Bible. [Heb. 11:3 By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible. 信仰によって、私たちは、この世界が神のことばで造られたことを悟り、したがって、見えるものが目に見えるものからできたのではないことを悟るのです。] For Christian, the book of Genesis, especially first few chapters are very important because we can know the beginning of everything of human history. But in fact, this is not our history, but God’s history.

Text Intro
Genesis Ch.1 is all about the Creation. The very beginning of the whole Bible start with the phrase, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” Notice that the word “God” is written in the plural in Hebrew, which indicates God is one with three persons. This one phrase means many things. For example, “beginning.” God himself doesn’t have beginning nor end, but he created the beginning of the heaven and the earth, and humanity. [Job 38:4-7 Job 38:4 わたしが地の基を定めたとき、あなたはどこにいたのか。あなたに悟ることができるなら、告げてみよ。Job 38:5 あなたは知っているか。だれがその大きさを定め、だれが測りなわをその上に張ったかを。Job 38:6 その台座は何の上にはめ込まれたか。その隅の石はだれが据えたか。Job 38:7 そのとき、明けの星々が共に喜び歌い、神の子たちはみな喜び叫んだ。 ] God created where we stand today, and where we look up today. I want to give three points today: God created everything, they were very good, and he is still working today.

God created everything
God created everything of this world, and there are the rules or patterns in his Creation. On the first day, he created the light by his word, and saw it and that was good. And then he differentiated the light from the darkness, and named on them as day and night. On the second day, God created the sky by his word, and separated the waters that were under the expanse from the waters that were above the expanse, and called it Heaven. On the third day, he separated the water and created the dry land by his word, and called them Earth and Seas. And God saw that it was good. By his word, he commanded the vegetation according to its kind (which is a new pattern), and he saw that it was good. On the fourth day, by his word, God created the sun and the moon, even there is no mention of the naming on them, and separated the day and the night. And he saw that it was good. On the fifth day, by his word, God created the creatures in the sea, water, and the sky, according to its kind, and they were good. He commanded them to be multiplied. On the sixth day, by his word, God created the creature on the ground according to its kind, and he saw that it was good.
We can see the pattern of God’s creation. He created everything by his word. He separated one thing from another (ex. Light and Darkness). He named on his creature (ex. Day and Night). He concerns the species of his creation. And he said it was good. The Creation of God was good, even to his eyes. [Psa. 19:1 ¶ The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. (Psa. 19:1 天は神の栄光を語り告げ、大空は御手のわざを告げ知らせる。)] This is unbelievable for us those who are living in this sinful world. At this point, there was no sin on the Earth, therefore, God said it was good. We never know what the sinless world looks like. We have lots of trouble, incident, murder, robber, every day and they are all caused by our sinful nature. Which means no one can have confidence that they will never do such a sinful behavior.

They were very good
On the sixth day, something very unusual was happened. God said, “Gen 1:26 Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” And this time, not by his word, but by his hands. [Gen. 2:7 then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.] He created man, male and female, after his own image. And he commanded them to be multiply and have dominion over all the creatures. And God saw everything that he had made, it was very good.
Why was it very good? God said, “very good” only after he created man. He created man after his own image, whereas the other creatures were created according to its kind. He created man not by his word like other creatures. He obviously separated man from other creatures. And he commanded man to be multiply, which is same commandment as he said to the other animals, but he also commanded man to have dominion over the creatures, which is completely unique to man. By which, God established the order of his creation, which man has dominion over all the creatures. And all that were very good.

He is still working today
“On the seventh day, God finished his work that he had done, and he rested from all his work that he had done.” So, what is he doing now? Is he working from Monday to Saturday, and taking a rest on Sunday? Or is he just resting without any concern on his creation and away from the world? No. He ceased his creation work on the seventh day, because he finished his work. From the seventh day, he has been driving his creation. The day and the night is coming everyday alternately, living creatures are multiplying continuously, people are keeping on multiplying. He is controlling the universe. He never sleeps and is taking care of his creation. [Psa. 121:4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. (Psa. 121:4 見よ。 イスラエルを守る方は、まどろむこともなく、眠ることもない。)] In this sense, we are still in the seventh day, even though we use the week system. (Which is the forth commandment from God at Mt. Sinai, Ex 20) We, those who believe God, are living in this seventh day. The seventh day is often called the Sabbath. So, spiritually, we are in Sabbath now. But for the people who disobey God, he says, “Psa. 95:9 when your fathers put me to the test and put me to the proof, though they had seen my work. Psa. 95:10 For forty years I loathed that generation and said, “They are a people who go astray in their heart, and they have not known my ways.” Psa. 95:11 Therefore I swore in my wrath, “They shall not enter my rest.” (Psa. 95:9 あのとき、 あなたがたの先祖たちはすでにわたしのわざを見ておりながら、わたしを試み、わたしをためした。Psa. 95:10 わたしは四十年の間、その世代の者たちを忌みきらい、そして言った。「彼らは、心の迷っている民だ。 彼らは、わたしの道を知ってはいない」と。Psa. 95:11 それゆえ、わたしは怒って誓った。「確かに彼らは、わたしの安息に、入れない」と。)

Application
So, how can we enter into his rest? By believing Jesus Christ as our savior. Today I only told about the sinless world. So far, it doesn’t make sense what is written in Ps 95. We will get into why it became the sinful world like today, soon. But we are actually living in the sinful world. If we do not listen to the gospel, we will never know about God and we do not look for God. Even after listening about God, we are “a people who go astray in our heart, and we have not known His ways. 心の迷っている民だ。 私たちは、神の道を知ってはいない” We do not look for God by nature, because we are also sinful. We have been bound to sin like a slave. Only way to be freed from the slavery of sin is accepting Christ as our savior, savior from death, because the Bible says “Rom. 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (罪から来る報酬は死です。しかし、神の下さる賜物は、私たちの主キリスト・イエスにある永遠のいのちです。)
Now, why Christ? Isn’t it enough to be saved by believing God or gods? Who is Christ? The answer is, because God is Christ. Jesus is God. The Gospel of John begins like this, [John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:2 He was in the beginning with God. John 1:3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. (John 1:1 初めに、ことばがあった。ことばは神とともにあった。ことばは神であった。John 1:2 この方は、初めに神とともにおられた。John 1:3 すべてのものは、この方によって造られた。造られたもので、この方によらずにできたものは一つもない。)] The Word [λογος] indicates Jesus. That is why God [אלהים] is written in Plural form. (c.f. Col 1:16)
God created everything, they were very good, and he is still working today. He is waiting for you to know God, believe God, and obey God.
